Why You Don’t Feel Like Walking (and How to Get Moving Again)

Simple mindset shifts that make it easier to start and keep going.

Most people don’t struggle with knowing what to do.

We struggle with doing it consistently.

There are days when walking feels easy.

And then there are days when you don’t feel like it at all.

You’re tired.
Busy.
Unmotivated.

And before you know it, another day goes by.

If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. In fact, most adults aren’t moving enough. But here’s the good news:

It doesn’t take a lot to start turning things around.

Movement Doesn’t Have to Be Extreme

One of the biggest misconceptions is that you need to do a lot for it to “count.”

That’s not true.

Even 30 minutes of movement a day can improve:

  • Heart health

  • Energy levels

  • Mood

  • Strength

  • Blood sugar balance

You don’t need to run a marathon.
You just need to start moving again.

What’s Really Blocking You?

A lot of times, it’s not physical—it’s mental.

Here are a few common thoughts that quietly hold people back:

  • “I’m not good at this.”

  • “This is going to be hard.”

  • “I don’t feel like it today.”

  • “I’ll start tomorrow.”

These thoughts feel real, but they’re not always true.

Sometimes we’ve just fallen out of the habit, and it feels harder than it actually is.

Here are some tips for getting back on track:

1. Make It Worth It (Create a Reward)

One simple way to stay consistent?

Give yourself a reason to show up.

  • Put a few dollars aside every time you walk

  • Track your streak and celebrate small wins

  • Treat yourself after a consistent week

It doesn’t have to be big—just something that makes it feel worth it.

2. Pair It with Something You Enjoy

It is one of the easiest ways to stay consistent.

  • Listen to your favorite podcast

  • Play music you love

  • Save a show or audiobook just for walking

Now it’s not just a walk.
It’s something you actually look forward to.

3. Start Small (Smaller Than You Think)

You don’t need an hour.

Start with:

  • 5 minutes

  • A walk to the mailbox

  • One lap around the block

Because once you start.
You’ll often keep going.

4. Shift Your Identity

This one is powerful.

Instead of saying:
👉 “I’m trying to walk more.”

Start saying:
👉 “I’m someone who walks.”

Small daily actions build that identity.

And over time…
That’s what creates real change.

5. Don’t Do It Alone

Everything feels easier with support.

  • Walk with a friend

  • Join a group

  • Be part of a community

When other people are showing up too, it keeps you going, especially on the days you don’t feel like it.

6. Keep It Simple and Realistic

Instead of saying:
“I’m going to walk every day for an hour…”

Try:

  • “I’ll walk 3 times this week.”

  • “I’ll walk 15 minutes after dinner.”

Simple plans are the ones that stick.

Final Thoughts

If I’m being honest, I haven’t always been consistent with walking.

There were seasons where I stopped, when life got busy, my energy was low, or I didn’t feel like it.

But what I’ve learned over time is this: it doesn’t have to be perfect to matter.

I stopped trying to do everything all at once and just focused on getting back out there. Some days it’s a longer walk, and other days it’s just a few minutes. But every time I go, I feel better, and that’s what keeps me coming back.

Walking has become something I do for me.
Not because I have to, but because I know how much it helps.

My energy is better. My mind feels clearer. And I feel more like myself again.

So if you’ve fallen out of a routine or you’re struggling to get started, I understand. I’ve been there too.

Just take that first step. Keep it simple. And give yourself a little grace along the way.

It really does get easier.
